Starter problem in1993 Ford Explorer XLT,4.0 6cyl Auto?

Question:
Hello, my Explorer has been very good to us over the years, so no complaints. Bot I gotta ask this question before I go tinkering because in this cold I'll lose some fingers during the hunt.
A couple of days ago we had the worst blizzard seen in this area in 50 years and I took the vehicle out to rescue my kid from school, pushed some serious snow and had a helluva ride. The next day it started fine in the morning (like always) but that afternoon after work just a click, one single audible click every time I hit the key. After 20-30 shots the engine cranked, caught and I was off. Shut it off that night and it started fine a few more times. The next morning the same problem and again after work. But again, after driving it would fire up no problem. Now the weekends here and I have to deal with this while it's -30 and my garage is not heated. In an effort to keep my fingers I'm trying to avoid a bunch of diagnostics, so if someone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

How do I change the brake fluid in my car?

A click from the fender well, from a black disc looking device is probably a bad starter RELAY (not solenoid). The relay (also sometimes called a contactor or mistakenly a solenoid) is usually on the fender well or firewall and is black and round with about 3 wires connecting to it. If this is the source of the click, then you can test it by using a helper to turn the key to start. When you get the click, check for 12 volts between the large wire going from the relay to the starter, and ground. No voltage, or less than 11 volts or so, indicates a bad relay. If you have voltage but the starter is silent then you have a bad starter. A clunk from the starter itself, followed by silence also means a bad starter motor that wil need to be replaced. Hopefully it will work until it warms up.

What is the best way to get tar stains off my car?

i own a repair shop, and probably whats happened to it is the snow or water got in it,,and is causing it to freeze up,,id just replace it,,and be done with it,,it will take less time to replace it than it will to try and repair it ,i did this once on a ford pinto,,it got the starter wet,,and ruined it,,i finally just replaced it,,but that's your best bet on this one,,the one thing that will do a starter in,is water ,,good luck hope this help,s.

are there any sites where i can find free auto repair advice?

Be careful you have TWO starter solenoids on your truck. one is under the hood which operates the one on your starter. You may have a bad solenoid under the hood which is heck of a lot easier and cheaper, check power and amps on the large cable after the solenoid under th hood(going to starter) while the truck is not starting, if no power then replace solenoid, if power probably the starter.
