Speedometer not working on rover 45 need advice.?

car is a w reg rover 45 everything else seems fine with the car but for some reason the speedometer just stopped,i need advice before i shell out big time.cheers
p.s would i be breaking the law if i still drove it like this

Is the ABS lamp also on? Most 45's of that age use the passengers side front abs sensor for speed measurement. Even if it doesn't have abs it will still have just one sensor at the passengers side front. Sometimes the reluctor ring (toothed ring) on the driveshafts CV joint cracks and comes off, check to see if it's there.
