Question:
Hello there, yesterday I borrowed my friends N reg 1.4 VW Polo to drive home for Christmas. The car has never had a prob before and after an hour I stopped and when I tried to restart the engine again nothing happened. All the lights come on on the dash, and the battery isnt flat. It sounds like nothing is hitting the starter motor.
Is gasoline a good sexual lubricant?
I tried to bump start it but there wasnt really much of a hill, so failed. In the end I had to shell out and join the RAC and they managed to jump start it by running a cable from the battery to what I think was the starter motor. He then told me to keep driving til I got home without switching the ignition off. Which I did..
The only thing is, I need to get back to london again..
was told i need a transmission controller for 2002 neon price $565 for part, does this sound right?
Does anyone know if a bump start should get it going? I am parked on a 1 in 3 hill at the mo. Havent tried it yet cos if it doesnt work, it will be at the bottom of the hill not the top. Or can anyone advise on jumping it with a cable to the start motor. thanks a lot...
Answers:
Ok I would guess its is the break switch(if the car is a 1999 model year give or take a few years). I have had 2 vws and the 1st one had the same problem like 6 times. You can try hitting the brake pedal a few times and sometimes this would get it started. but eventualy it wont help.Otherwise you will need to bypass switch.

leaking transmission fluid in 2002 Chevy Malibu?
A bump start will get it going. Use 2nd or 3rd gear, roll the car down the hill and when you think you're going fast enough dump the clutch. As soon as the engine is running push the clutch back in.What will cause a power window to stop working in a 1990 Toyota Camry?
If that doesn't work, find the positive terminal of the starter and run a wire directly from the + terminal of the battery to that. (For god's sake don't get the wrong terminal though!) Sounds like the solenoid has gone, which shouldn't be too expensive to sort out.
what does happen if my engine block cracks and how cold does it have to be for it to happen?
*** To the person below - a VW polo should have the battery and starter freely accessible. And as the original poster said the RAC bloke ran a cable from the car's battery directly to the starter and that turned the engine over, it sounds more likely to be the solenoid or relay that's given up. Also, I assume it's a manual transmission, so you won't have the problem with the 'belts not turning'. ***

You'll need another boost from the auto club or neighbour. The starter and\or the alternator needs replacement. My money is on the altenator. What is wrong if there is a humming sound coming from the front wheels?
The alternator does double duty, it produces electricity to fire the plugs in the engine and also gives a trickle charge to the battery to recharge it from the last start. The battery needs a lot of electricity to get the starter to get the engine to turn in order to start the pressure/gas/air combination needed in the cylinder to produced a mini explosion when the piston is at the top of the cynliner. The battery doesn't have enough energy to get the starter to work, but it does have enough to light the light when you open the door and keep the dash lights going.
Where can i found information about turbocharger TB25?
Unless the car is old, rolling won't help in start because the belts don't turn unless the engine is running. The belts used to turn when the car went down hill but this was changed as engines became more complicated. A rolling start can also hurt the engine and lead to accidents.
If you don't know how to start a car with jumper cables, it's best to let a neighbour do it who does. I don't know the car's configuration. In some newer models you can't even get at the battery anymore to jump start them. Which is maybe why the mechanic went to the starter instead of the battery. Some manufacurers have put them in many models now a place where people like me can't get at them.
