As already stated the balk ring which slows down the third gear hub is worn out, (it gets the most use) if it was a clutch fault you would experience this problem in all gears. however out of respect to the other contributors a new clutch should be fitted when the gearbox is being repaired or replaced, it is quite possible that a nearly worn out clutch has quickened the demise of this item.My 1998 ford explorer remote unlocks but will not lock anymore what gives?
You are probably experiencing problems with the clutch when trying to engage this gear.maybe ya not pressin clutch down properly?? i dno but thts my guess sorry couldnt help u much

It sounds as though the third gear synchromesh is worn. If it were a clutch problem then you would experience problems with all the gears.

Sounds like a bad synchronizer, I just had this problem. I just had it fixed. Mine was in 5th gear though. Can be cause by having a heavy foot or quick acceleration.More Questions & Answers ...
