Do I have a steering mechanism problem or do I need a wheel alignment?

knock sensor is bolted to the block. it detects pinging in the cylinders and retards the timing to eliminate it. it can turn the check engine light on. if it is defective and you don't replace it, your car will emit excessive emissions, oxides of nitrogen. NoX. if you have something else in the engine making a knocking of ticking noise such as a bad lifter, the knock sensor may pick it up and think it's engine is pinging and retard the timing. you need to determine if it's defective and replace it if it is. if the engine is pinging and you don't fix it, you could do severe engine damage such as broken rings or pistons. the pinging is fuel igniting and exploding prematurely in the engine rotation. fuel should burn smoothly in the engine, not explode.

I drove my 04 Accord without the knock sensor for almost 6 months with no problems.
