sounds like a thermostat.There cheap and easy to replace.Follow the top radiator hose to the engine,there is a housing with 2 bolts sticking out usually 1/2 or 9/16 wrench or socket will remove them.Any auto parts place has them usually 5 dollars or so also ask about the recommended open temp.180 degrees is what I, usually use.You can also just remove it and use nothing but no heat....and it,s cold this time of year.

Sounds like it could be more than one problem. If you smell coolant it does sound like your heater core has a leak. If you are not getting any heat and the engine temp is up to normal it could be your temperature regulator control is not working or there is a good chance if the vehicle is getting on in years that the heater rad core is plugging not allowing enough flow through to give off heat. You could check the hose running to the heater and see if it is hot or not, if it is cold you obviously do not have a flow through your heater, once again it could be plugged or temp control not opening to allow hot water to flow through the heater core. Check to see if it froze cause you didn't have enough anti freeze. If it did freeze let cool down and restart until it starts to heat up again. repeat until thawed.
