Check your radiator coolant level, if it is low, add coolant and check for leaks, the coolant went somewheres, eighter leaked inside the engine or outside on the ground. Could need a new radiator cap, or heater valve. Sometimes the heater valve leaks, mine did on my explorer, that explained the low coolant level. So I replaced the valve and filled her up, she has been fine since.Two words

On a van the heater cores are fairly easy to change. And then flush the cooling system while you're at it. The coolant smell in the van is telltale of a Heater core. If the smell is outside when hot open the hood and look for coolant leaks on the radiator and heater hoses.
It is probably a "Heater core" do you notice moisture in the passenger side floor board, or on the windshield?
Check and see if you have wetness inside the van on the passenger side floor where the feet are, if it is wet its your heater core. If it is not wet you either need to replace your thermostat or your water pump and thermostat. Check for antifreeze on the front of the engine and track it to the source..
If you dont know what to do in this situation either find a friend whome has some mechanical experience to help you or take it to a shop.There are too many reasons why this could be happening,knowing the age and make of car would help but I would probably say the same thing.

sounds like a thermostat.There cheap and easy to replace.Follow the top radiator hose to the engine,there is a housing with 2 bolts sticking out usually 1/2 or 9/16 wrench or socket will remove them.Any auto parts place has them usually 5 dollars or so also ask about the recommended open temp.180 degrees is what I, usually use.You can also just remove it and use nothing but no heat....and it,s cold this time of year.i own a repair shop,and first check to see how low it is ,in the radiator,,or the coolant bottle,,second you need to look in the floor board and see if its wet or dry,,it may be a heater core leaking on it ,right now it might just be leaking slowly ,,but if you keep driving it,,there's a possibility it may get a lot worse in it,,you could also do a lot of damage to the engine if it gets hot,,and you don't want to do this ,have it checked out real good ,id say you need a new heater core ,also inspect all of the hoses you may get lucky,and it just be a hose leaking on it,,good luck hope this help,s.,,happy new years.
Check heater core area for leakage. Passenger seat floor area. Sounds like a heater core problem or the hoses to and from the heater core. Heater core could also be plugged up.

Sounds like it could be more than one problem. If you smell coolant it does sound like your heater core has a leak. If you are not getting any heat and the engine temp is up to normal it could be your temperature regulator control is not working or there is a good chance if the vehicle is getting on in years that the heater rad core is plugging not allowing enough flow through to give off heat. You could check the hose running to the heater and see if it is hot or not, if it is cold you obviously do not have a flow through your heater, once again it could be plugged or temp control not opening to allow hot water to flow through the heater core. Heater core - I use to smell coolant right before my feet would get soaked when something broke. Then I would have no heat and the car would run hot. Yee-haa. I discovered somewhere in there that if I could stand the cold and drive a little fast, I could drive the stupid car until I could afford to have it fixed. I also discovered that driving fast to keep the temperature gauge from running hot was not listed as an acceptable excuse by the highway patrol.Check to see if it froze cause you didn't have enough anti freeze. If it did freeze let cool down and restart until it starts to heat up again. repeat until thawed.

DO NOT just remove the thermostat, its there for a reason. get it diagnosed and replace what is broken.Check your heater core. See if your passenger side floor is wet and smells of coolant. Depending on the age of your care I believe. But get it checked quick.
If you can actually smell radiator fluid inside the car.. then your heater core has developed a leak. Albeit a small leak but a leak just the same.

The radiator needs refilled before you overheat the engine.
Heater cores typically sell for @$25 dollars each. What will gig you is when the dealership charges @$150 dollars or more to install it.
If you are hot blooded.. you can plug off the heater hoses and drive without a heater. Most people would just get sick driving around without heat in the car. I know I would.
