Question:
Here is the deal. We took our car to a well known mechanic today. It is an older car that has been sitting for a couple of years. The car didn't go into any gears other than neutral and park. The mechanic said that the fly wheel was broken and caused the torque converter to seperate from the transmission. We have had no problems with the transmission before the day that it went out on us and the day before we took it to the mechanic we had the car started. It seems as though the problem they are suggesting is something that would present problems prior to the loss of gears. There have been no fluid leaks or shifting problems at all so what I want to know is if this is something that can go wrong for real. btw I am a woman who mechanics for some reason thinks is a mechanical moron (I grew up around mechanics and garages).

ok, well if the flywheel is cracked or broken, you can check that for yourself by jacking the car up ( what I'm about to say is not explained this way due to your gender, I don't know what you do or dont know about vehicles), and looking at the back of the engine, the flywheel will have teeth on it and is a big gear. If there is damage or missing parts, there you go. If the flywheel is broken, it could have happened from the starter not being properly shimmed or adjusted, ( did you hear a loud whine, grinding or snap while starting the car?), also, its possible some debris from the road flew up and hit the flywheel, ( though most cars have a flywheel cover to prevent this) . A problem with transmission bands, I'd say youd notice loosing a gear or a shifting problem way before all the bands went out. Put it in nuetral or park and listen for grinding or any funny noises when u start it. If the flywheel broke, it could have wrenched something in the tranny, but I'm not 100% positiveWhere to find Gemini alarm remote keys?
yeah well the flywheel connects to your transmission the engine will still run but the truck isn't really gonna go anywhere without the connection to the flywheel that connects to your manual tranmission...What is the best engine oil for a 350 Yamaha ATV other than what is available from the dealer.?
Yes the flywheel could be missing teeth and you would only notice a problem sometimes.i have a ' 92 nissan sentra it does not start when its cold?
if the car wont move you may have a plugged trans filter from sitting too long or it may be out of oil.check trans oil with engine warm and it park.if it drives but wont shift it may be modulator valve on trans or vacuum leak to it.if the flywheel broke it would make a load noise.better get a new mechanicMore Questions & Answers ...
