Question:
Just yesterday burnt smell started coming from the ac vents of my 1993 altima. After stopping the car and checking the engine area, the smell seemed to be pretty strong around the alternator. I had the alternator replaced about a month ago. Later today while driving with headlights on the engine started shaking and died while I was waiting at the light. I turned off the headlights and started the car and it ran fine but the smell was still there. Last time I got the car checked the mechanic mentioned that there was a hair-line oil leak but he said it was too minor to be fixed. Any ideas what could be wrong? Thanks.

Could be that you have a faulty alternator with bad bearings. If your car died due to lights then that could be the case. You could also be leaking oil on the alternator and that could cause it to not work properly. If you can, take it out and bring it to a parts store that can do a test to see if it is still good. If you have a small oil leak, you can buy a bottle of oil stop leak and put that in, if the crack is hairline it could help out and at least lessen the leak. If it has nothing to do with the oil then i would check the radiator lines for leakes as well as the radiator itself. That stuff goes straight through the ac vents.Mazda 626 Alternator overvoltage?
sounds like you got a bad alternator and it is cooking the wires or else the bearing is going bad I would definitely get it looked at, it is bad time of year to get stranded.More Questions & Answers ...
