Drive Shaft Boot?

Question:
I own a Maruti 800. Its 8 years old and done about 37000 kms. The mechanic replaced the 'drive shaft boot' and said that if it starts making noise you've to change it.
Is it true? Can someone tell me what exactly is a drive shaft and how much does it cost and how do I know if its worn out?

cv joint on the drive shaft gets warn it is like a universal joint on a rear drive car, and the boot covers this joint and when the boot gets bad it lets out all of the grease that keeps the cvjoint lubricated so if he has changed this boot because it was torn then the life of the joint has been reduced considerably. When it starts make a clicking noise when you back up then you need to start looking for a new cv joint.

On many older US cars, most mechanics replace the complete axle with a remanufactured axle when the boots split open since the total cost can be even less than repairing the boots themselves and you end up with a new axle too. However, exotic or expensive cars may not have cheap remanufactured axles available for them in the parts aftermarket.
