Question:
iam not too bad, when it comes to working on cars, but this car has got me stumped.i have a 1988 olds 3.8 and all of my plugs are black, and the following things i have put on it are,new gas filter, air filter, idle air control, throttle position sensor, cleaned the throttle body, new plugs and adjusted them at 0.60,new plug wires, new fuel pump regulator, the fuel pump is new,new coil and module,i was told the oxygen sensor can act up and the check engine light doesnt have to come on.can a oxygen sensor make plugs black?and by the way,i also got a new cat on it.iam asking you guys,if you got any ideas if it could be the oxygen sensor.iam running out of ideas.i appreciate any help you can give me.thanks alot guys.

My steering wheel makes a clicking noise when turned full lock to the right...?
i own a shop and yes a 0-2 sensor will make them burn black ,it causes it to load up and run rich just about all the time, just enough to make the plugs run black in it,that's a good engine your working on if its running right the plugs should get a light grayish look to them,if there not, id replace the 0-2 sensor it helps control the fuel flow to the engine, good luck with it hope this helps.Does a fire truck suck up water when there is a flood?
The O2 sensor is your most likely culprit. This sensor reads the exhaust gases and tells the computer how to adjust the air/fuel ratio in your car. If it goes bad, it won't necessarily turn on the engine light, especially on an OBD1 system, but it can make your car run rich, therefore making your plugs black. What can I wrap around my starter to protect it from heat?
it's pretty hard question man, dont u think there is something elsewhere which makes that prob ?I want to fix holes in my car by welding sheet metal to it... what grade sheet metal would i use?
So you have put how much money into this?..and you have not mentioned how the car runs?..are they ac plugs?..the right plugs? O2s can cause that .but what are you trying to fix? rough running? SES light? fuel mileage ok?Ebcm relay circuit is coming up as code.please help me/////?
Change the oxygen sensor as that is the most likely suspect and you should also get better operation and mileage. Have not changed my plugs in over 100,000 miles, but engine runs great and I still get the same gas mileage. The oxygen sensor should have been your first thing to change as it is also a time replacement thing, but it would also make the engine run rough if it was not working properly. ~if your plugs are fouled so could your oxy sen its in the induction sys ck lite could not be on i doubt it would be the problem rich fuel not enough air , weak ignition is about all you got to go with
ck air fuel mix condition of ignition syst(weak coil module) timing could be slow
kind of hard to say without seeing car has it lost power use to much gas carb. or fuel ingection now im guessing
Good luck
How safe is it to use a car charger / cigarette lighter splitter?
Black sooty build up on the plugs usually means the air/fuel ratio is too rich, you have a weak or intermittent spark, or spark plug heat range is too cold for operating conditions. The oxygen sensor could cause the air/fuel ratio to be off, as well as any mass air flow meter you have in the ductwork to the throttle body. After these changes the only change left to be made is to install a plug with a higher heat range. If i put a regular unleaded gas on a vehicle that has a premium recommended fuel what will happen?
IF YOU CAN CHECK THE PRESSURE AT THE FUEL RAIL. BLACKEN PLUG DEPOSITS CAN BE CAUSED BY EXCESSIVE FUEL, OR BY FUEL NOT BEING BURNED. IF YOU HAVE EXCESSIVE FUEL PRESSURE YOU COULD HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE INJECTORS. IF YOU HAD A OXYGEN SENSOR PROBLEM IT WOULD BE IT ISN'T SWITCHING PROPERLY FROM LEAN TO RICH ON THE FORWARD SENSOR(S).Honda Accord 2002 Gear Delay more than 3-4 sec?
The engine is running too rich causing the "black" plugs! The o2 sensor can cause that because the ECM is evaluating the information and making the adjustments. If the o2 sensor is faulty, it will not be able to make the proper computation and the engine will not run properly! Someone may have put a kit in the TBI and never programed the computer accordingly! Kids do it all the time and haven't got a clue as to what they are doing! You have to have the right heat range plug according to your driving habits---city or open highway also!
