Stickshift won't move into gear when car is on?

Question:
In my Mitsubishi Eclipse, the stickshift will move into gear when the car is off but when it is on it won't move into gear. If i try to force it into gear, it won't move into that position and will grind but if i put it into 1st gear and able to start it. it will drive. What can the problem be. Appreciate any help. new clutch and get a new gear colum for you probally have broken alot of the spikes on the gear shaft

It sounds like you may need a new clutch. Check your clutch fluid (just uses Dot 3 brake fluid) to make sure its not low first. That could save you hundreds of dollars. If you have a lot of miles on the car, its likely the clutch.
