Question:
And I have no idea why. My car isn't making any odd noises and although I think it has a leak somewhere that causes me to have to refill anti-freeze every month, it has no serious problems. I'm talking about a Chevy Malibu here, an older one, like 8 years. However, my boyfriend drove off without the gas cap the other day and he said that his mechanic told him that the check engine lights in Malibus are super sensitve and will come on when there are excess fumes or something? Is there any truth to that and if so, do you think getting a new gascap would fix the problem? What does the check engine light usually signify? And do I need to worry about my car just breaking down on me?
Answers:
I've been in the car business for 10 years, and know people that drive cars like that for years and tens of thousands of miles with no worries. The only danger is that if something more serious comes up that'd make the light go on, you're not going to know, and it would get worse. So try to get it reset when u can.

Name of part that holds on passenger side mirror for 2000 VW Jetta?
You can go to Autozone and they will read the code for free. If the code comes back evap leak small or large then have them reset it and drive it for awhile making sure to leave the car off while fueling and putting the cap back on when done. If no code comes back then it was just from leaving the cap off. If the evap code come back then you have a leak somewhere. A shop with a smoke machine can detect where. If it's some other code then you'll need to ask another question. My parents have the same car and this also happened to my Mom a few years ago.
