On the 4 banger they are both Mazda engines, little difference but some upgrades each year to the emission system. You did not list the engine size, 4, 6, or 8. ALso the 4x4 has a different option for the trans. so there may be a housing change for the transmission.Is it safe to drive with overdrive problems?
