Question:
It is a 1996 saturn wagon, I know I need a tune up but I think it is more than that!
Answers:
What are the wheel alignment specs on a 2005 chevy Z71?
A tune-up will not solve this problem (the cheap mechanics just change spark plugs and call it a tune-up). Good "honest" mechanics are hard to find. The problem you are having with your Saturn is a plugged up Valve Body on the Transmission. Fluid is being impeded and causing the transmission to slam... and in your case, cut off the engine. It's a well documented problem on the Saturnfans.com website.
Hopefully, yours can be fixed with just changing the transmission fluid and filter. After you completely drain the transmission (you can do this yourself) and replace the filter, be sure to refill the transmission with 5 quarts of Dexron 3 ATF. I'm guessing this is an Automatic, right? If it's a manual trans, it's something completely different.

How can I tell if I need new brake pads on a 1991 Chevy Beretta?
If that doesn't work, the valve body will probably need to be replaced (which is on the expensive side)
Here are some links to steer you in the right direction, all of them are from the Saturnfans.com Forum:

Good luck.
Go to a mechanic!
Should I anticipate any problems after re-installing a thermostat that was put in backwards?
Its the transmission, if its an automatic youve knocked it into park too roughly too many times, if manual then youve shifted wrong too many timesmy saturn wouldnt go above 60 the other day after an ice storm.. and its a 2006 ..invest in a different car manufacturer next time lol
How old is your battery?
You could need new plugs, they could be faulting out?
Does your car lights dim when your are applying the brake?
I think you should take to a shop.
Might be your tranny?
Rear pump in the transmission is going out. Or you have a bad solenoid in the trans
Does my car need to run the oil cooler or can i take it off and just run the radiator?
I think the OP answered their own question..."I know I need a tune up"
That could very well be the problem. One fouled spark plug could make or break a vehicles performance (esp. if there are only 4 of them).
