Some really amazing answers appear from people who you least expect. My 97 Dodge 1500 exhaust system is solid welded from end to end.
To cut the pipe, either a wheel cutter, die grinder, or a cutting torch can be used. The replacement mufflers have extra pipe on the ends which are expanded to fit the pipes and then welded in with a wire welder. Some shops may still use acetylene gas welders, which was used a long time before somebody invented
the wire welder.
Do you need a new muffler? Just ask the muffler shop man if you can stand back a ways and watch how he does it. My money is on one of the ways I mentioned.

it's very unlikely that your catalyst and your muffler are one unit. the catalyst usually has a flange that allows it to be bolted to the back half of the exhaust system. usually mufflers have the "U" type clamp holding the muffler to the middle section of exhaust piping.

What is causing my tail lamp to malfunction?

in the event that the car has no clamps or flanges, it would mean that as some point someone has welded all the slip-over ends of the exhaust sections, if so, the exhaust shop will have to use a saw to cut the old piping out.

The answer thus far, except the first, are good. The shop does use either a cutting torch or die grinder, depending on clearences.
Once done, they will need to lenghten the extension pipe with another section to make up for loss due to cutting. Otherwise the tail stock will not match OEM. Most of the time it's better to replace the unit from the cat back.
