I was driving to work when my break lights came on. A quick look at my manual and under the hood my break fluids were low. A guy at the part store said there should be a reason why my fluid was low and that break fluid shouldn't be something that goes low like other fluids. But after I put the fluid in and the light went off. The breaks feel fine, actually better since I put the fluid in. I haven't seen any puddles of fluid under my car. I checked the manual and checking the break fluid is part of the schedule maintenance. So which is it? Does break fluid need refilled every once in awhile or does the fact that my fluid is low means something else is wrong?

I drive a '98 Dodge Neon, and also found that my brake fluid gets low after a while. My mechanic tells me this is partially due to how hard I apply the brakes and how often (I have a lead foot and drive faster than I should-but who doesn't?), and also just happens naturally over time. Some very small fluid loss does occur over time as the pads wear down, and should be checked every time you get the oil changed, just to be sure it is at the correct level. If you had to put in a larger amount of fluid (say half a bottle or more) then I suggest you have a mechanic check the brake lines for a possible small leak someplace, usually around a connection or joint in the line.

Low brake fluid level in the master cylinder could be an indication of ether a leak or worn brakes. The capacity of the master is large enough to allow for displacement of fluid from the master to the brake calipers to compensate for the wear on the pads. If the level has dropped enough to turn the low fluid level light on then ether it is leaking or the brakes have worn to the point of needing servicing.Ether way you need to take it to a garage and have them inspected to determine why the fluid went so low. Topping up brake fluid should not have to be done.

With any vehicle maintenance, when the brake fluid is just above a minimum level, the light will come on and the brake will be hard. The fluid does need to be checked as frequently as getting an oil change.
