Question:
I know I have a bad fuel pump in my 2000 Alero. It just started acting up 3 days ago and occasionally, but not often, cuts out. I want to drive to a car dealership to trade in but it is about 90 miles away. Any thoughts on if this is a horrible idea or if it will continue to start after it stalls for one last trip? Thanks for your help.

I probably wouldn't risk driving your car with a bad fuel pump 90 miles to the car dealership, unless I had a friend following me and I had a roadside assistance membership card.I do believe it could just stop pumping the fuel you need to the engine to provide you the power to operate your car.
Couldn't you just change out the fuel pump before making the trip? Wouldn't the dealership offer you more money on a trade-in if the car could at least make it around the block and back?

If you do try it,( but I'm not recommending you do) do it with a full tank of fuel, the fuel helps keep the pump cool and will better your chances of getting there.what are possible effects of having a bad fuel filter on a car?

how do you know of your car has thrown a rod?
anything is possible but usually when the pump dies it is done for good not an on and off thing. I would suggest to change the filter first and hope.First of all u should make it clear about ur fuel. I mean petrol or gas?
if its petrol, i can suggest u one thing. Put some fuel in a can & connect the can directly to the injector or the carburettor, whatever u might have. Disconnect the fuel pump. & remember to place the can above the level of the injector or carburettor.
I have just bought a Ford Ka but there is only one key. How do I get a spare key?
You should be concerned with the pump failure causing the engine to run lean and consequently detonate. If you want a band-aid solution to get the car there I would plumb an in-line fuel pump into the existing fuel line between the dying pump and the fuel rail. Not exactly a DIY'ers solution though. Why am I getting a code reading for a part that is not installed on my 1993 GMC Sonoma pickup ?
If your fuel pump goes out the car will not run. You no longerget gas from the tank to ur engine. Sounds like it might be a
clogged up fuel filter or maybe even bad gas. Taking a 90 mile
trip is out of the question, U will never make it.
Wrap a cloth round your pump and then pour some water on it to keep the pump cool . Hope it will work.
Well if you don't plan on keepin it you should be fine...might stall because of lack of fuel ever now and then but I think it should be fine...but if I were you I'd ask a mechanic or someone like that

Even with a broken POS for trade in I had some jerk ask me if $40 dollars was going to keep me from buying a vehicle, I said no it won't but it would seem that $40 is keeping you from selling this vehicle.

1st work out a firm deal with the dealership (Get the Best Deal you can) on the new car that you want. AFTER that ; then mention that you have a car that you'd like to trade in to get a bigger discount on your new car.Tell them the circumstances of the bad fuel pump and they will probally give you a deal on your used car and take care of the towing of your car for no charge.More Questions & Answers ...
