Does the alignment on your car matter?

Question:
I bought a 2002 civic in 04 and the alignment was always perfect, but now when i let go of the steering wheel it veers to the right slightly. How did this happen, did i hit a curb or something? Does it need to get fixed? Any long term effects?

Misalignment can happen because of several reasons. A good alignment specialist can tell you if your car is out to bad. It can cause premature tire wear and can wear out other front end parts. In my area it generally cost 50.-75.00 dollars for a front end alignment. In the long run, it saves on tires and makes driving much more desirable.

Best to get it fixed. Not only that, but getting it fixed will make it less likely that you accidentally veer into the ditch or into another car.

Arrrgghh I'm having car troubles...?

The tires can wear unevenly. It will not perform as well in hard turns or manuvers. Braking hard may pull it to one side. Hitting a curb can do this-it doesn't have to be at high speed to do it. You could also have worn front end parts or a strut problem. The next time you get an oil change, if a mechanic ( not one of those oil change places ) is doing it you might ask that he look over the front end of the car. That will rule out obvious problems. If this concerns you a lot, or if it gets worse, take it in to a reputable mechanic for this specific problem.

Check all the tires' pressures before doing or buying anything. If they are low, which I suspect, then adjust them to proper inflation. This should cure your problem, if it really is a problem. Cars are normally aligned to pull slightly to the right. This is done for safety if you fell asleep while driving, the car would pull off to the shoulder instead of into the oncoming lane. The potential for disaster is lessened by a car pulling to the right then traveling straight or pulling to the left. In Britain and the Bahamas, the opposite is done because they drive on the other side.
