in my experience, ive seen most ford trucks have 3 main reasons the check engine light comes on. 1. gas cap is loose or the rubber seal on it is bad. 2. O2 sensors either picked something up or are going bad. 3. the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve is bad. ive seen more ford trucks have EGR valve problems than most any other vehicle. your local auto parts store should be able to read the code for you and tell you why the light is on. the check engine light comes on for either an emissions issue or in extreme cases the transmission. another alternative is to disconnect your battery for about 5 minutes. this will clear all the information from the cars computer. the light will go out. if it stays out, then it was just a one-time reading and all is well now. but if it comes back on, then it needs to be checked out because something is definitely going onwhat are spring shackles on a truck?

If you are lucky, you just filled up your gas and forgot to put the cap on all the way. There is a sensor for emissions that turns the check light on when gas tank pressure cannot be maintained (lose or defective cap). Good luck.2004 Grand Prix Won't Start Sometimes?
Have you changed the O2 Sensor yet? That is more than likely the reason its on.Go to the nearest autozone, ask them to bring out their Code Scanner and check it for you.
If they won't do that, then they will rent it to you for $5.00 and you can do it yourself.

Try checking the oil, my Ranger's check engine light always came on when it needed a quart of oil.
Go to Autozone or Advanced Auto and have them read the codes stored on the engine. Then you will at least know more about what you are dealng with. Start there it may be something you can fix with thier guidance.

There are many local auto parts stores that will access your computer for free & tell you what the "code" is. They can not diagnose it but it can lead you in the right direction. Start there. It is most likely an oxogyn sensor failure, if the vehicle continues to run O.K. don't be too concerned. Let me know what they tell you
