The Lifters on My 55 Chevy Rattle What is Wrong Here?

It is a newly rebuilt 256 c.i. V-8. In fact it was just finished by me and my brother who is a mechanic 2 weeks ago.
We have tinkered with this thing for 2 weeks now trying to find the problem but can't seem to figure out what the problem is.

if you used solid lifters you will have problems but if they are the modern hydraulic lifters take the valve covers off and run it so you can adjust the rocker arm nuts wile its running, that normally works plus sometimes after running a newly rebuilt engine for a wile the lifters will sometimes need adjusting.

i own a repair shop,and you need to re-adjust the valves on it ,and go by the book procedure on it, if you used new lifters and cam it should adjust out of it ,if you got a good repair manual it gives a good procedure for doing this ,good luck i hope this help,s.

Adjust the rocker arms to tolerance. If it doesn't lessen the noise, then take off the heads, and mic out the parts for wear. If everything else fails, then run a higher octain fuel.

Was the cam break-in done properly? You must run a new engine at 2000-2500 RPM for 20-30 minutes to provide enough splash lube to cam lobes during initial fire-up.

Check to make sure the rocker arms are oiling. This could indicate the lifters are starving for oil. Also, make sure its not a wear issue if rocker arms, pushrods or valves were re-used. Did you check the valvetrain geometry properly?

Is this an aftermarket performance cam? Some of them make a little more noise. Solid lifter cams make a lot of noise. But if this is a hyd lifter cam, then set 1/2 turn past zero lash, when lifter is on base circle of cam lobe.

cost to replace power steering?


Does it only rattle on acceleration? That is ping/detonation, not valves. Recurve timing and use higher octane.
