I have a 2003 Pontiac Grand AM and it will not shift gears (automatic). It started out sticking under 35?

MPH and now it won't go into any gear. I am taking it to the mechanic but just wanted possible causes to prevent getting ripped off since I don'y know much about cars. Any ideas?
