87 ford ranger smoking alot i know there is a oil leak of some significance. I found oil on the spark plugs ??

I agree, and the tire dealers charge more to change tires on alloy wheels! One nick and they leak, a little corrosion and they are scrap.
Alloy wheels were supposed to be better because they were lighter. It reduced sprung weight on racing cars and helped reduce gas milage for everyone else. The money you saved on gas could be used to maintain them.
They were also easier to customise into different designs.
I would never have alloy wheels on a car I owned.

If your tyres on alloy rims are losing pressure too easily, then the chances are the alloy has corroded andyou are not getting a perfect seal on the rim of the tyre.

Alloys are OK, but a waste of time on most cars. To look good you need to buy more expensive rubber which doesn't improve handling, ride or economy. As I said, a waste of time.

they are lighter for better performance. bare in mind that the weight of the wheel is 'unsprung', so its important to make them lighter. Also ads resale value, should maintain better pressure. And they are mostly lower profile for safer handling.

First of all, all you need to keep alloy wheels looking OK is to keep them clean, especially in the winter, as salt build up will cause them to corrode, the same applies to steel wheels, but they just rust away, instead the alloys start to pit!

All tyres loose pressure, regardless of whether you have alloy or steel wheels, so the point you make is not relevant!

They are great if you look after them. Keep away from kerbs and clean them regularly and they will look as good when you sell your car as when you bought them.
