I only have 3rd and 4th gear on my 1999 vw beetle (a 5 speed) - what could be the problem?

was driving in cold rainy conditions and it would not go into the other gears

Answers:

new battery and glow plugs but still have to turn over about ten times to start?

i own a repair shop,check and see if it has any free play in the shifter,,especially where 1,st and 2,nd should be,,if it does it may have busted a bushing for the shifter ,other wise it may have snapped the shift fork in to,, inside the transmission,i seen this happen on one of those for no reason at all,the customer was just shifting gears,,and it lost 3 of its 5 gears,,when we tore it down it had two bad synchronizes in it,,and a broke fork inside,,all we could do was replace them,and it seems to work fine now,parts wasn't too bad for this job,,around 300 from vw new,,that wasn't too bad,,good luck with it,hope this help,s.,,have a good x-mas.
