Shifting into DRIVE after it was in NUETRAL, the car dies?

Question:
1994 Mercury Topaz
The car did restart again, but I had to turn the ignition a few times. On the last try, I held for a couple seconds and pumped the gas.
I was sitting at a red light. Normally I would keep the car in drive and press on the brake, but my dad suggested sitting in neutral while pressing the brake. It was working fine until today, when after shifting back into drive I pressed the gas and the car died. I'll be taking it to a mechanic, but I'm curious what it could be until then.

Trans am with 350 csb?

if you have an automatic trans dont do this it is only if you drive stick. I hope you knew that much but the car's starter or battery maybe needs replacement.
