1995 Chevy Lumina 3.1 burnt valve?

hey everyone i have a 1995 chevy lumina 3.1 with 170,000 on it. its a great car. but i had to have a head gasket put on it. while they were in there they found a burnt valve and i was wondering why it was burnt. was there a reason. maybe because of the year and or miles. thanks..
