I just had my Toyota 2wd tacoma 4cylinder muffler replaced from the catalyic converter BACK for 400$ and it sounds ike hell when its around 40MPH and then again at 60-65 it vibratres all to hell and howls like its a musical instrumnt almost like on 2 octaves ..or when you rub your finger on a wet glass it gets that tone ..! SInce this is a matter of opinion what course do i have to get the mechanic to replace it with a better one? My original muffler was obviously great! it sounded ike a car! now it sounds like a tank but i know the mechanic will say its fine the JERK! what can i do ?

the description you gave of a "howl" is a great tell. It sound to me like the muffler was installed backwards and the exhaust flow is cavitating and causing the problem. If the system was installed by a professional you have every right to expect it to sound like the original exhaust unless you had a discussion with the mechanic prior to work be completed and agreed upon something different. Hold the shop accountable!!you need to take it right back...sounds like they left holes in the connection pieces!
Take it back and ask them to do check it. They may have put a cheap muffler on it. If you get no satisfaction, call the BBB. They will help you get it resolved and it's free.

I noticed when my honda was replaced it did the same thing. There is usually a brush gaurd that they don't tack and it will vibrate. bad connection is possible but could be that the pipe is touching the body somewhere or they left off one of the isolators on a mount ( this can make amazing noises )Where's the best place to fix your breaks for a car?

For $400 I would be back there and tell him to test drive it himself.What kind of muffler did he put on? A performance muffler which will be louder in the cab due to resonance of the sound through the bed of the truck. Or did he put on some cheap pos that is causing unwanted restriction and the howl?
When I did the catback on my Dakota I left the pipes a bit shorter then the factory. The sound resonance under the bed made conversation in the cab, at speed, almost impossible. I put 45 degree extensions on the ends to get the exhaust noise out from under the bed and bida boom, bida bang.. now just a deep rumble.

take it back and tell him what its doing.if they installed it right,it shouldnt vibrate.did he put new hangers on it and tighten the clamps.i know when i got a new muffler,they usually ask me what sound i wanted.so,what i would do is take it back and get on their case.Well I would say the muffler could be in right, but if it is a chambered muffler, like a flowmaster, they have what we call a sweet spot. That is a ceratin RPM that causes a loud interier resonance.....its loudest noise, put it that way. For me it was 1600 rpms. You might need to get a different muffler.....There are so many mufflers with different sounds. For the vibration thats not normal, they might have the muffler right up against the body and it is bouncing off the floorpan or frame. I would go get a different muffler.
