I paid $96 fee for car dealer to diagnose check engine light on. The policy is that if you fix car there $96 would toward the repair fee. It was found that the disconnected hose caused the problem. The technician fixed car by just connecting the hose. Five days later I found that the check engine light on again. I sent my car back to the dealer. This time I was told that the charcoal canister system need replaced. Total charge for labor and parts is about $430. I was not charge for diagnose fee this time. I think it is very possible that disconnected hose and bad charcoal canister system were existent when I drop my car the first time. I guess after fixing disconnected hose, the car did not get second diagnosis. But I know that if you disconnect the car's electricity or clear the code the check engine light will temporary off even your car still have problems. Am I right? Do you think it is reasonable to ask dealer to deduct $96 from $430 for repair check engine light on?

I have worked as a service writer at dealerships and most of the time the"diagnosis" consists of a technician plugging a device called a scan tool into your car and reading a screen. A small percentage of the time the technician has to do actual diagnostic testing and in this case he should be compensated for this time, but in your case, it sounds like he didn't.whats the best way to save gas?
If you had your car serviced at a car dealer's service department, I would go back and ask to speak to the Service Manager and explain that you like the service department, but feel that the charge was unreasonable since you paid for repairs. Make sure you talk to the Service Manager and not a servcie advisor or assistant service manager. They are just there to sell service and repairs and usually don't have the power to give a refund. If you purchased your car at this dealer, you should point that out too.

If this is an independant repair center, ask to speak to the owner or if it is a chain, the store manager. If the store manager won't help, ask for the phone number of the district manager and call him.

In either case, the key is to be nice and polite, DON'T cut down the technicians or the shop, but do firmly insist on a a refund of the charges.

Your vehicle has a computer in it that turns the check engine light on, when your car is running or you are driving it this computer not only interperts signals from sensors it performs self diagnosis, therefore if there were multiple problems or the problem existed at the time the dealer worked on the car the first time it would have been evident.Consider yourself lucky they did'nt charge you for a second diagnosis. You had a new problem and it sounds like the did'nt charge you a second time for a diagnosis.
It doesn't hurt to ask, if $96 is worth it to you. Go talk to the mechanic and/or person in charge of the garage and see if your supposition is reasonable. It is possible that the problem cropped up later, but it is more likely that the problem could have just been missed.

I'm presuming you weren't rushing them to get the car out the door. I would ask the mechanic if there would be any reason why the light wouldn't come on immediately, if the problem existed when you got it.
