Can i drive a car if the clutch is damaged?

i have a nissan, the car will not go foward or backward, any ideas what it could be and how i can tell?

You can drive a car with a non working clutch. At a certain speed(rpm) your transmission can be changed from one gear to another by matching the engine speed with the transmission. It takes practice but can be done. I have driven extensively this way. You can even start off with it in gear by just letting the starter move the car at the same time it is starting the engine. Not recommended, but if an emergency it is nice to know.
Your transmission may be low in fluid if automatic, or it may be the adjustment linkage needs adjustment to engage if a "straight" shift.

no, get it towed to a shop and get the clutch fixed, otherwise your gonna wind up replacing the flywheel, and possibly the transmission as well. btw johnny j is totally wrong, you cannot move the car with the starter because of a device inside the transmission that will not allow the engine to start if the clutch is in the engaged positioned.this was done because people would leave the vehicle parked in gear,and if it rolled itd start the engine,since its in gear the engine will keep moving the vehicle.like i said, get it towed, and like the other responder said, get a rental.

its sounds like it could be that your clutch must be GONE. most of the time when ppl say thet need to replace the clutch, its because the notice the when they drive the engine speed will increase but the wheel speed will not, thats because the cluth is slipping. if you can't get the car in gear. its a chance that your clutch is not being released.
