What damage can stalling do to a car?

Question:
my brother wanted me to move his car for him because he hasnt passed his test yet. But when i went to pull off the car stallled and wouldnt start again. He now thinks i damaged his starter motor and wants me to replace it. Do you think i could have caused the starter motor to fail just by stalling it once?

Probably not. The starter motor disengages after the car starts, and stalling out (I'm assuming this was a manual) shouldn't hurt it. It sounds like his starter was about to fail anyway, and you just happened to be in the driver's seat when it happened.

There are many other reasons for a car to stall other then the starter burning out. There could be a faulty belt, broken air hose, low fluid level, the list goes on and on. Why don't you have a mechanic go take a look at it and have him tell you whether the starter is broken or not
