Cubes rule. Go with the 350. They are a dime a dozen and you have TONS of performance upgrades for it. A lot of bolt on and run with it type stuff. Better heads, better intake, better exhaust options. You may also want to have the rear diff changed out. If I remember correctly the 78 olds Calais came with a 2.78 rear end. This does not offer a lot of off the line starts but will give you a higher MPH speed on the road. if you want to rod the car out put in a rear end that is at least a 3.50 you can get the final drive number off the tag on the rear diff. the change out of the gear seat is not all that complicated and can be picked up at any auto parts store. Happy Revvingwell in all actuality you r going to hear everyone say 350 but in fact you can biuld a 305 to be faster than 350 because cylender walls on 305 are thicker but 350 has a more heavy duty crank assemble best to get 350 4bolt main and that means there are 4bolts in each crank mount housing.
