the darker the more crap is in it, obviously crap in the oil hurts the engine parts... think of something else that needs lube, and if ther was sand in it!?.. think you get it... dark color, burnt type smell meens time to change... depends on how you value your car. they usually recommend every 3000 miles,but you have some idea,by pulling the stick out.if its turning black,then its probably about time to get it changed.do you know what it looks like,when the oil is new,dont you?,then compair it to the color on the dip stick.
