Question:
it sounds like it coming from inside the engine ..could that effect it or can it be something else...the car is a 4 speed...it started to make this noise like 3 days ago...what could it be...should i worry ablout it the car still runs perfect when i rev the car it starts to get faster i think it could be a piston or something
Answers:
Why does my GM 350 make a lound tapping sound for about 5 seconds when started up every morning?
it could be sevral things. the connecting rod on the piston, or just a valve out of adustment, also depends what kind of VW it is if it has the 4 cyl thats in the older beetles or karman ghias the valvse need to be adjusted every 3,000 miles if it is a newer engine it could be just cause it has a lot of miles, there are alot of moving parts in a gas engine i would take to a mom and pop type VW mechanic shop they probly could tell you right away..Since the noice is coming from the engine even after raising the speed mostly any one of the piston ring wouid have got broken, it may happen sometime.
No spark on 1999 Intrepid, JM. Thanks?
My guess is the valves are out of adjustment. If it seems to actually run a little bit stronger than before but still making that noise while reving it then you are experiencing what tight valves will do to the engine. Before too long it may just start coughing and backfiring through the carb on you. Another sign that the intake and exhaust valves are so tight that they dont fully shut while the engine is operating. I urge you to check the valve lash when the engine is stark cold. The lash should be .006 on the intk and exh. With my experience with the aircooled vw's the intake valves are normaly the loose ones and the exhaust valves tend to tighten up. Good luck.Check the oil and top up if it is low - sounds like tappet noise, which means the head isn't getting enough oil and is becoming noisy.
