My Ford Escape sounds like the engine is revving. All RPM's are fine. Nothing else amiss. What is it?

Question:
It is a 2005 Ford Escape. It just started doing this, and is only noticeable during significant acceleration and deceleration, meaning generally over 15-20 MPH.

TIG welding on American Chopper / Biker Build-off etc.?

The engine is significantly louder, and almost sounds like the car is one gear too low. I checked the transmission fluid and it is far beyond the max line. Could that be due to water mixed in with the transmission fluid? We had a couple of snow storms recently that really taxed our vehicle.

I think I am just hoping that is all it is. But for the engine to sound like it is humming loudly in a lower gear, seems like it must be something more significant. Another note is that I can feel the vibration in the floor of the vehicle when I accelerate.
