Is it my cat converter or an O2 sensor?

Question:
Check engine light came on. Code said problem was on the 2nd bank. Mechanic told me he wasnt sure if it was the O2 sensor or the cat. After a week Check engine light went out. A month later, now its back on. Went back to get it checked and they told me the same thing. Which one could it be? It doesnt have alot of power like it should. Everything else seems to be running normal. No rattling on the cat or no glow. So what do you think it could be?

I think it is your o2. check on your car models wed site most of the time they have and 800# you can call or type in a question to them

Where does the coolant for your radiator go..where is the radiator?

hi, some more car info would help, year, make, model.. with the 2nd bank part i am going to assume that its a v6, there is a bank 1 and 2, depending on car, there is 4 02 sensors, 2 upstream ( before cats) and 2 downstream (after cats) these are usually refferred to as cat monitors tho., so with a lil more info i could help u more.

What was your first car?

Sounds to me like o-2 sensor. Not sure if it will affect power or not though. I guess it could. If it were catalytic converter it would still give problems (they don't usually fix themselves).
Good Luck.

Help the filter did not help?

i own a repair shop, and it could still be either one on it,or it may have just been some bad gas that caused this also,it will set the check engine light also, and the 0-2 sensor will do this, show bad one time and then not,so its still a good chance it could be either one, most likely though its the cat because if its loosing a lot of power this means its not breathing real good, and you,ll also notice it using a little more gas also,,but have auto zone scan it.its free, and this will at least tell you if it might be a sensor going bad on it,good luck i hope this helps.

Slipping Clutch?

It's not the cat. All a catalytic converter is, is a section of exhuast tubing that has certain elements inside it which heat up with exhaust gas and burn off some of the pollutants from the engine. Your cars ecu has no idea what happens with the cat, it could not be there for all it knows. The loss of power can be from the 02 sensor not functioning properly and therefore the ecu is not giving the engine the proprer air fuel mixture. The light going off then reapearing has happened before in my experiences. I wouldnt trust the mechanic you took it to, they might be trying to take you for some money. They have code readers which tell exactly what the check engine light means. I dont know what kind of car you have but the next time the light comes on you should check online and see if there is a procedure you can follow to tell what code / problem is causing it.

Workshop manual for VW Polo 2003 (UK)?

perhaps you should go to a different mechanic.

What could possibly be wrong with my mothers car??

You really need to supply more information but basically it's impossible to tell unless you give me the code.

Why Replace Anti Sway bar End Links?

It could well be a bad cat, especially with your description of power loss which is typical in a bad clogged cat. But saying it's a "bad cat" is as stupid as saying it's an O2 sensor which some of these idiots here do all the time. You CANNOT know unless you get the code AND perform some other diagnositics.

My car a 1993 ponitac sunbird runs well in very cold weather for about 15 20 min.then it seems to bog down.?

Pete is the biggest idiot here though- not only can he not possibly know it's not the cat, but he's dead wrong in saying the computer has no way of knowing what the cat is doing. If your car is 1996 or newer it has two O2 sensors one pre and one post-cat. The post-cat sensor is there for the SOLE PURPOSE of analyzing the Cat's efficiency. If it finds the cat is bad it will throw a code P034X to the computer and cause check engine light.

Come back with more specifics and I can help more. And I apologize that Pete is such an idiot.
