Will Building up an engine get me better or worse gas milage?

Question:
If i have a 4 cyl engine, and put lighter pirsons, better rockers and springs, basically gain more HP and make it more high performance, will that hurt my gas milage or make it better? What about putting a turbo on? What role does that have on the MPG?

A turbo will absolutely RUIN your gas mileage. Basically if it goes faster you use more gas, it's that simple.

If a Coca Cola gets put into a truck's gas tank, what would it do?

Lighter pistons will help with the engine revving higher, but not a whole lot. A turbo will cause your engine to use more fuel. When building up to get more horsepower you always loose mpg..... bigger cams, heads, valves...carbs.... it all uses more fuel.... more fule=more power.... you just have to live with it. :)

Are import car parts more expensive than American parts?

anything you do to create horsepower will decrease gas mileage unless it is a better flowing air filter and in that case you will gain horsepower and gas mileage, also a free flowing exhaust will help hp, and gas mileage.

I have a '97 Jeep Cherokee, I was quoted a price of $1500 for repairs am I being over charged?

It can help your gas mileage depending on how the engine burns fuel now. If your changes made the engine burn fuel more efficient, then you will get better mileage. A turbo should only burn more fuel when it kicks in and should not change the mileage too much.

imobiliser system is blocked?

as my dad always said... when you call your horses in from the field, you must feed them. that means, you use the power, the mileage goes down. if you dont use the power, mileage will be just as good.

What do you mean by better pistons, rockers and springs? Are you doing a complete engine rebuilt? If that is so then you're also changing old connecting rod and main bearings. New piston rings are also necessary. Placing just those parts you mentioned above may not necessarily improve your mileage per gallon. You have to do a complete overhaul of the engine. Once a good joy is done with a complete overhaul you should get better mileage but I'm not sure you get more hp unless you'd have the cylinders rebored to get bigger pistons. This would mean a greater displacement of fuel and air intake mix. With other systems workiing well, performance should be increased overall

RAV4 1998, engine light is on, what is going on...?

It depends on the build and whether you are looking for highway, city, or track gas mileage. Changing engine components and adding a turbo alters the volumetric efficiency (VE) of the engine, a measurement of how well the engine converts the air/fuel mixture to mechanical energy at the crank. The gear ratio on the transmission also alters how much torque from the engine gets to the ground, affecting gas mileage. Automakers find a compromise for all factors such that the car achieves a desired MPG range while still adhering to emissions standards and maintaining drivability. Back to your question, lighter pistons reduce the rotational mass of the engine, increasing VE, rockers and springs will not unless cams are changed. A turbo will definitely increase VE although it will also increase fuel consumption. If you are looking to save money by getting better gas mileage in building an engine, look elsewhere, as the money spent towards building the engine can buy a lot of fuel.
