What is causing the grinding noise when I try to start my car?

Question:
I have a 1999 Mercury Cougar and I've gotten the flywheel replaced, which had parts of teeth missing at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock on the flywheel. I have replaced the starter also. It only makes that gear grinding noise about every 10 to 20 times I try to start it. After about the second or third try it will start just fine.

with the model of vehicle that you have one of the most likely problems since you have done all that you have done and replaced on it would be the following: it sounds like the starter needs to have shims on it... you can get shims at any auto store and they are pretty cheap.. they go in between the starter and the bell housing of the transmission.. let me know if this helps you out

Make sure all the fluids are full...trans fluid, oil, etc....hard to tell through email.

maybe you got a bad starter. take it back and ask for a new one where you bought it
