This is to cover the fact that most modern engines are ugly (no kidding) compared to the old ones. Most are pretty easy to remove. Even Chevy has one on their Cobalt, so they're pretty commonplace now. They might also provide a psychological barrier to poeple trying to fix their own rides, but I can't confirm this either. It might also serve to dampen engine noise as well.If it were me, and I don't like engine covers either; is to remove the cover and drive with it off to see of the noise is tolerable. Other than that, you should be fine. The engine would get dirty with or without the cover. Be sure to save it when you sell the car.

Its meant to keep the engine cleaner... otherwise no special purpose for it... you can remove it but i wouldnt suggest so because very soon the engine will get dirty and dusty and it reallz doesnt look good than.No power to my Windshield Washer Fluid?

The cover is put to keep the surface clean and moreover it gives a very organized look when the hood is popped open. Beyond this, it serves no purpose. Most of the high end car makers provide engine covers for their vehicles.
