My car will crank but will not start?

Question:
I have a 1981 Oldsmobile Cutlass LS. A diesel engine and carbuerator.

If the car cranks well, then the chances are that this is a fuel related problem. But that covers a lot of ground, from a clogged fuel filter (very cheap--hope for that one) to a bad fuel pump (expensive and all too likely in a car that age). It could also be a problem with the carburator. There is also a small chance that it is not fuel but fouled spark plugs or the starter itself, but my bet is on fuel. (BTW, The person who suggested glow plugs doesn't know much about cars: you don't have glow plugs.)

But in the end, all these have to be guesses, because I can't look at your car. You need to take it to a mechanic, and preferably to an old-time mechanic. Most young guys in this business today have never even worked on carburated engines. Good luck!!

For starters a Diesel doesn't have a Carburetor. You say it cranks so that puts the starter out of the question. You should check your filters and fuses for starters, always K.I.S.S. Then you should check your fuel supply and make sure you are getting fuel to each cylinder. Also if your car has ever been over heated, you may have melted holes in the tops of your pistons and aren't getting any compression, which is what makes your car run. You should take it to a decent mechanic and have them check it's compression.
