just got a 2000 trans am WS6 with 60K on it and no owners manual. The dealership apparantly can't find a record of them changing the oil so they can't tell me what type to put in. A couple of forums say to use a 0W40, anyone have any thoughts? thanks in advance.

You should be able to use 10w30, I would recommend you use Slick 50 engine treatment it will help the performance and improve the gas mileage. When I worked for Cadillac we used 10w30 in all the cars. Good Luck and GOD Bless,96 jeep grand cherokee with non functioning trailer lights?

5-w-30 was what it had in it when it was new ,you can use a good 10-w-30 in it now,and it will be fine,but id stay with a good brand of oil ,never go with the cheaper oil,it doesn't hold up as well as the others do,good luck with it,those are nice cars,i hope this help,s.Where in the state of Florida.....?
Hell no. Look at the oil filler cap, look for the letters SAE and something like 10W30, 5W30 those are the only two you should use in your engine. If the DEALER can't tell you what kind of oil to use, find another place to get your car repaired, they have NO CLUE what they are doing there.will a car battery recharge just by idling or does the car have to be in motion?

i wouldn't use a 0w40, that is an extreme cold weather oil. look on the filler cap. most manufacturers will have it embossed on the cap. i personally run 10w30 synthetic oil i everything i own. and don't go with a single weight oil (sae 30, sae 50).I think that those cars came from the factory with mobile one synthetic and I believe that they were the 10w30 that has the LS1 5.7 ltr motor right? I believe that is what it should be>.
