I have a 2001 Subaru Legacy Sedan, 2.5 L engine, and we think the heater core is broken. At first it leaked anti-freeze right under the driver side front tire, but now my husband says that ONLY when the heater is turned on it leaks, and some foggy mist covers the windshield. We got an estimate for around $1000--is this average? Any suggestions for me please?

sounds like a heater core. that price may be a little high but it doesn't sound outrageous. If i remembercorrectly you hveto pull out the entire dash to get to the heater core. This could be as muchas a 10 or 11 hr job. subabruu's are not the easiest. do you live in the cold weather? hrmmm a leak outside under the tires would indicate a hose or a head leaking...maybe even the radiator..but if you have a wet carpet then its most likley a heater core...My transmission makes a big clunk noise when I change from P to D and from D to R?

Yow! $1000 for replacing a heater core sounds like a lot of $, but the symptoms you gave make it sound like that's likely the problem.I'd get a couple of more estimates, but it may be that the heater core is so difficult to get to that it requires a lot of disassembly to get it out and that would be why it would be expensive.

Heater core. It only leaks when the heater is on because that's the only time water circulates through it. It can be very time and labor intensive getting to it to change it. I'd ask around a bit and get a couple of estimates, then go ahead and get it fixed. It's too cold not to have a heater.The cost of the heater core is probably in the area of $75.00 to $150.00, but the labor is the wild card when it comes to heater cores. The dashboard and many of the inside features must be disassembled in order to reach and replace the core. Based on normal shop rates, if the estimated time is around 6 hours, this seems about right.

Your husband is absolutely correct and that is a very good quote for replacing the heater core it is a very hard job for a Subaru. Whenever you smell antifreeze inside the car and you have a haze allover the windshield on the inside then it is diffidently the heater core.
