it went on and off 3 times within a 20 minute drive yesterday. and today the vehicle was driven for 10 minutes, lost all dash lights and 5 minutes later died.
how bad is a wee oil leek on my car is it easy and cheap to fix?

alternator and or battery tooYour battery's probably over 4 years old and you need a new one before you do anything else. Hopefully the old battery has not overloaded your alternator and burned it out. You need to replace old batteries to protect your alternator charging system from damage. Once a new fully charged battery is installed with clean tight battery connections, then measure the charging voltage across the battery at a fast idle. It should read about 14 Volts DC. Turn off all the bigger electrical loads in the car when you check the charging voltage.

Hate to sound like a broken record here, but it sounds like your alternator. They used to call alternators "generators" because that's what they do -- generate electricity. The battery is only used to start the car and to power the electrical components when the car isn't running. But if the alternator goes bad and doesn't work anymore, your car has to run off the battery -- and eventually the battery will die. Recharging the battery will do you no good if the alternator isn't working because your car will only run until the juice in the battery runs out again. Your best bet is to take or tow your car to a local mechanic with a good reputation (NOT a dealership -- they'll charge you top dollar and do a crappy job) and ask them to check it out. Most mom-and-pop outfits give free estimates. If it is the alternator, you're looking at anywhere from $200.00 to $500.00 to get it fixed, depending on the type of car (parts for foreign cars cost more) and whether you get a new or rebuilt alternator. DO NOT have the shop rebuild the alternator for you -- made that mistake once myself and spent a fortune on a repair that lasted about 15 months. I'd also advise you to have a shop do it unless you have a friend or relative who REALLY knows what they're doing who can replace it for you.
