Easy. Your carbareutor is leaking for one thing. There is an overflow pump on some and the seal breaks and gas will leak out.Is $500 a reasonable price for a new car alternator with labor?
Also fuel line leak. Check the engine cuz this can start a fire.

If you are carburated, take it in and have your mixture checked. You could just be running too rich (the ratio fo fuel to air. You have too much fuel going on, it's not burning off)some times cars create a flow of badness into the car when the seals and weather stripping go, or it could be flowing from your trunk into the car. Or you aren't burning all your fuel, or you have a gas leak(prob. not that check though), or you might just need a tune up. hmmmm, consult your cars physician. it may very well be something simple and easy to fix don't get dicouraged, but don't be breathin' that s*** for too long k?

bad fuel filter, maybe a hole in the top of the tank or if you have a carb, you might need to clean it out to assure proper air/gas ratio for combustion. you might want to check if you fuel lines are bad going to the tank.That would depend on where the smell is coming from... If you smell fuel near the engine,you may have a cracked fuel pipe .(they are often made of rubber,which becomes hard and brittle with age) If the smell originates from under the car,you may have a damaged fuel line. (carries fuel from the fuel tank to the engine)
The best thing would be to run the engine and look for leaks...(using both eyes and nose!) When the engine is turned off,the fuel evaporates quickly,making the leak difficult to trace...

I will assume the smell is comming fromthe tailpipe. If its a carbourated engine it sounds like its rich, which means your getting more fuel than you need for combustion. You will need to adjust/rebuild/replace the carb. If its a fuel injected engine, it could be an O2 sensor, throttle positioning sensor, EGR valve and/or EGR solenoid, or other associated parts. If its fuel injected and you are not getting a check engine light I would look at the O2 sensor, it is one of the few things in the emission controll system that can fail and not trip a code,More Questions & Answers ...
