It sounds like you might have the start of gear hunting. This is a phenomenon on older automatic transmissions where the transmission seems to get confused as to what gear it wants to be in so it starts shifting up and down without the driver doing anything. Some people say that getting the trans fluid flushed and refilled can help this a little. BUt the next step up from there is getting a the trouble codes read to see if anything comes up on the transmission. Then the next step is a transmission rebuild.
