Question:
I have a 97 Mercury Tracer (just like a Ford Escort) and I was wondering if
a) They naturally have a rough idle
b) The needle in the temperature gauge never goes to the center, it's always running cold.
These are my car's symptoms, any advice? By the way, I am planning to change the EGR valve soon.

It sounds like a leaky thermostat. The engine needs to get up to the right temperature to run properly. You probably need a 195 thermostat which would make the engine run at 210 or so. Fuel injected engines need to run hotter than carburetor engines.Macco advertises a $200 paint job, but........?
Change the thermostat. It's never getting up to the operating levels in temperature. The cold start system isn't going off, which *might* explain the rough idle, but it's more likely you have other issues on the idle. But start there.IF THE HEATER IS WORKING GOOD NOT A PROMBLE
is there a way to permanently paint the manifold exhaust?
You can get an indication of how hot your engine is from the heater. The needle position on the guage doesn't tell you a lot.It should not be idling rough.More Questions & Answers ...
