How should I drive my stick shift car downhill?

Question:
Should go downhill on Neutral or should I go on first or second gear?

Answers:

When I was young my favorite car was a 59 Bonneville, have not seen one in years. Rust buckets?

It depends on how steep a hill your driving on,and if you are driving in the country or city. In the country road this is what I have learned, for a very steep and long road, I put my car in neutral and let it coast down. Only putting my foot on the clutch and brake to slow down when I need to. For a small hill driving country roads, I just keep my car in the regular grear, like 3rd or 4th and clutch-break when I need to slow a little. The only time I would put my Car in first or second gear, was to pull a load like a boat trailer and stuff. OR for if my breaks aren't working and it happens suddenly! Then I would gradually down shift to the 2nd and then 1st gear and pray a lot that it's gonna stop! In the City when driving on a steep hill, I would most likely keep my car in a lower gear when going down hill and maybe I would even go into neutral if the road is long enough before I need to stop. Another thought that might be of interest. If your driving up a steep hill and it seems like your car is going slower and slower, you must downshift to give the engine more power to climb that hill without stalling out. Have fun! I had a heck of a time with holding my car stopped on a steep hill and keeping the motor running while waiting for the traffic light to change to red and before I could get the car moving forward, I almost rolled smack into the car in back of me! After a week It was ok!

How often should you bring your car into the mechanics for rear differential service?

Do NOT descend the hill in neutral gear. You should choose the lowest gear that is suitable for the gradient, ie the steeper the hill the lower the gear.
