What do you think it is?

Question:
I need help. I have a 97 lumina 3.1. The problem started out with the temp over heating and they thought it was the water pump. We replaced it. It worked fine for about 1 week. Then My temp gage started to go up and down (back and forth). I need coolant every other day.. Then I was on the free way and it would not acclerate properly, and I'm hearing a noise coming from the lifters?? (thats what people tell me) I just had an oil change before this all happened. I also have water or something in my oil.Does this sound like a gasket? People are telling me to have a rebuilt engine put in with out even looking at it... HELP

Vehicle maintenance?

We have a 96 and had a similar problem. It probably is the head gasket. We were always adding antifreeze, but didn't have problems with over heating. Anyway, the antifreeze was making its way into the oil and that can cause serious problems. Don't get a rebuilt put in it. Aside from the bad gaskets it is a really good engine. Your fluctuating temperature is probably from a bad thermostat.

Vauxhall Astra - indicator light stays on after car is switched off? What's going on?

i own a repair shop, and i think what has happened to it,,is it blew a head gasket,,this causes water to get in the oil,,and it may have done some real damage to the engine also, that will also explain it still getting hot on you,,take it to a garage ,,and have them do pressure check on it,,this will tell if it has blown a head gasket or not,,but id say just from what you have told me,,that it has,,good luck hope this help,s.,,PS,,it may also have cracked a head on it,,if it got hot enough,
