My 87 Bronco has been hard starting for a while now.The engine will turn over at a normal rate about 4-6 times then roar to a start and i hear a spinning sometimes.Usually if I cut the truck off then right back on it starts right up or maybe turns over once or twice, but i always get the sound- kinda like trying to crank up a car thats already running.It is also idleing up and down like crazy until warm.
Ive check the basics already, tuned it up, battery, changed all filters,adjusted idle, injectors cleaned.Is it the starter? coolant related? Fuel delivery? Every mechanic ive gone to so far is an idiot- and thats been a few.

maybe the solenoid on the starter motor is still drawing current after the engine has started and placing extra power usage on the motor in idle Also check the small starter gear is not grooved or jamming.Have the starter checked, most places check em for free. Sounds like the started is dragging... could be lots of things, most common is the soledoid is sticking, weak spring, etc. Examining the gear on the starter is going to tell you alot, be sure to check for missing teeth on the flywheel once the starter is removed. Keep the shims (if any). Its also possible someone replaced the starter and didn't shim it correctly.
you have a weak starter that is also catching on your fly wheel. You can have the starter tested a auto parts store.

the egr only works after the engine is running, not during the starting. the starter or the solenoid may be going bad. it sounds like the starter is not disengaging when it should but has a slight delay. this is because the bendix, the little gear which spins the flywheel, is not disengaging instantaneously when you stop the start mode. it could be simple to fix and that would be to change starters. it may also be som corrosion on the battery terminals, or inside the cables themselves. check these both first.the fast idle may be out of balance, not just the regular idle. also try checking all the vacuum connections for cracks or looseness. they should be somewhat tight but not overly so. a good snug fit is fine. the fast/slow before it gets warm can be caused by a vacuum leak.
