Question:
On a 1989 Thunderbird, does the VSS have anything to do with the way the transmission functions? My speedometer will sometimes go to around 20, stop, and then jump up to the correst speed. The transmission is also funky. So what does the VSS controll?

Is there any advantage to having your tire dealership fill your new tires with Nitrogen?
A 1989 Thunderbird is equipped with an AOD transmission, which is ENTIRELY mechanical. There are no electronics involved on this particular transmission. In fact, there isn't even a lock-up torque converter. The VSS is used as an input to the speed control amplifier, and/or electronic instrument cluster on vehicles of that vintage. It wasn't until the early to mid '90's when Ford introduced the AOD-E/4R70W transmission, where electronics were added for better shift scheduling/control/smoothness, and overall efficiency.why does my diesel shogun have problem starting in the cold?
