the oil lamp indicator on my BMW has come up and the engine is not running smoothly. it is making a strange noise. the oil level seems to be ok when i checked it.

an oil warning lamp means lack of oil pressure. even if you have plenty of oil in the engine, if the pump is broke, you still have no oil pressure. A "change engine oil" lamp means what it says. dont confuse the 2. if you have no oil pressure DO NOT DRIVE IT!! oil pressure could indicate a bad pump, ask your mechanic to check it with a actual gauge,, the running rough could be something totally different, like a dirty Plenum or throttle body
