My car only makes a "buzzing" sound when I try to crank it....is this a starter problem?

Question:
A few times in the past six months or so, my car (a '98 Chevy Lumina) wouldn't start--wouldn't even turn over--at first, and then I'd wait a few minutes and try again, and it would start fine. Today I had been driving it and had parked at my husband's workplace for about an hour. Tried to crank it and now it only makes a buzzing sound; the engine won't turn over. Is it probably the starter? And would it be more likely to be the whole starter that needs replacing, or just a part of it? If you need more details, email me. Any help is REALLY appreciated!! We need our car! Thx.

can any one tell me were i can get after market exhaust manifolds for my sierra xr4x4 2.9?

It could be the starter. You can take it off and go to an auto parts store and they can check it to see if it is any good. If you do not have the time or any way of taking it of I would recommend going to a shop. Ask around and see what shops are good in your area.

where is the fuel relief valve on 96 Toyota sl 5 6 cyl 4 wd?

you most likely need a new starter. what is happening is there is a "dead" spot on the inside of the starter, which in the simplest terms, is not making a connection when you turn the key. but when you turn the key, it causes the armature (spinning core inside the starter with many contact points across it) to turn a little untill it hits a spot where it makes a connection and starts. to test this, next time i dont start, take a long pipe or similar item and give the starter a couple of medium taps on the side of the starter if it is readily accessable. if it starts, it is definitely the inside of the starter going bad. in any case, it would be the best thing to go ahead and have the starter replaced.

Don't start buying parts and smacking things until you have a better idea what the problem is, first thing to do is locate the source of the buzzing sound, is it under the dash, coming from the fuse/relay box under the hood. If its under the dash that rules out the starter and solenoid and a relay would be the likely cause. Solenoids and starters don't usually buzz when faulty, A solenoid will sometimes make a rapid clicking sound when the battery doesn't have enough power to fully engage the starter. Start simple and locate the source of the buzz, usually pretty easy as long as you have one person holding the key and another searching.
